Fashion Meets Solar Power

Brilliant! After all, a mobile device is intended to be just that - mobile. Why is it that we can't charge our devices in a mobile way? Outlets in automobiles don't count. We're still confined to our cars during the charging process of our devices on the road. What happens after you hop onto the sidewalk and your phone doesn't have enough juice to handle a day in the city? Well don't fret, my friends, because we may be in luck. The concept of using naturally re-occurring sources of energy is nothing new. Windmills date back to the first century AD, and hydro-power even further - going all the way back to the ancient Mesopotamian empire around 4000 BC in which they used gravity and flowing water to rotate bladed turbines. Nowadays though, the renewable energy industry is flowing with innovation and new, effective implementations and ideas for sustainability - one of the newest of which is renewable energy clothing or apparel that generates small amounts of electrical power. That's right! Solar fibers manufactured by Dutch start-up company "Solar Fiber" are being used in clothing prototypes for the purpose of generating enough electricity to charge your phone on the go. While such technology is still in very early phases of design, this opens the gates for innovators in the renewable energy industry to optimize and possibly even come up with better alternatives. While the concept is truly amazing in theory, the technology hasn't quite caught up with the energy requirements needed to actually charge mobile devices in today's world. On top of that, one could make an educated guess that such apparel would only be financially available to people with fat wads of cash to spend on solar-powered clothing. Personally I think some of these pieces of clothing look like suits of armor you'd see a Night's Watchman wearing from Game of Thrones - not particularly my personal taste for fashion but hey, it might work next time you decide you want to charge your cell phone during your visit to King Richard's Faire.

France to Aid Renewable Energy Industry with $13B Plan

France has announced a $13.4 billion energy plan designed to reduce its dependence on atomic power from 75% to 50%. The nation plans on using home renovation and insulation as one avenue of saving energy - allowing home owners to deduct 30% of the cost of thermal insulation from their taxable income. It's no secret these days that renewable energy firms are comping up with new innovative ideas and methods for providing alternative, sustainable energy to consumers. France is addressing its heavy dependence on atomic power and has developed a plan to fund a 13 billion dollar project aimed at rectifying what it considers to be an issue. This could mean new markets for companies like Angstrom Advanced who specialize in renewable energy products and services. Part of their plan is to give incentive for people owning diesel powered vehicles to convert to electric and offering to buy their non-renewable means of transportation. Boston, Massachusetts, USA - Oct 3, 2011Angstrom Advanced, Inc, a leading developer and manufacturer of hydrogen generation and Renewable Energy related products, announced today that US National Renewable Energy Laboratory has successfully completed testing of VERDE-160S, the first hydrogen electrolyzer for renewable energy in the world, invented & developed by Angstrom Advanced Inc. The VERDE system is specifically designed by Angstrom Advanced to adapt to varying renewable power sources, like wind and solar “The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) installed, commissioned and tested an alkaline electrolyzer system provided by Angstrom Advanced, Inc. The electrolyzer, model VERDE-160S, was installed at NREL’s Hydrogen Test Facility (HTF), which is adjacent to the Distributed Energy Resources Test Facility at the National Wind Technology Center. ” – Testing and Analysis of the VERDE-160S System from Angstrom Advanced , Kevin W. Harrison, Marc Mann, Michael Peters, Robert Remick, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Energy Department . The test at NREL’s HTF successfully provided independent verification of system performance. With this invaluable information, Angstrom Advanced will be able to further improve the VERDE Renewable Hydrogen Generation System. Renewable power, such as wind and solar energy, has some inherent disadvantages that prevent it from being effectively and fully utilized: wind & solar power generation is both intermittent and non-dispatchable. In current renewable energy systems, when the wind and solar power sources become less intense, conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels must be used again to mitigate any shortages of electricity. Dealing with these disadvantages is one of our top priorities, as we strive to see fossil fuels replaced with renewable resources. Also of note Hydrogen production in the world is currently dominated by the use of high polluting fossil fuels, while only 4% of hydrogen produced in the world is currently produced by clean electrolysis (the production of hydrogen through electrolysis driven by clean power). Angstrom Advanced is developing the Renewable Power Generating System ‘VERDE’ to collect extra renewable power during peak periods and produce hydrogen in a clean and effective way, as a means of energy storage. What sets VERDE apart from existing techniques is that current practices focus on how to smooth intermittent electricity to operate hydrogen generators, while VERDE system adjusts the output of the hydrogen generator based on the fluctuating power being supplied, making for a much more efficient system. This system is especially cost effective for use in remote wind production regions, where grid systems are limited. Angstrom Advanced Inc. Now Provides Hydrogen Fueling Stations!

Angstrom Advanced Inc. now has the capability to provide the 50Kg/hour production capacity Hydrogen Fueling Stations, after collaborating with leading research organizations and national laboratories in the United States for years. This technology has made the Hydrogen Fueling Station ready for commercial operation around the world, and we are only waiting for the auto makers, such as Toyota, Honda, Daimler, Nissan, Audi and GM to release Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles in the next a few years. This brings me to another piece of news, be it a bit outdated, but in October of 2013 Massachusetts Governor and the Governors of seven other states signed an MOU focused on Zero Emission Vehicles.
It agrees to the creation of a multistate ZEV Program Implementation Task Force. It contains agreement on a target of 3.3 million ZEV on the road in the eight states by 2025 with annual reporting on the number of vehicles and electric/hydrogen stations open to the public. Each state will establish their own ZEV targets. There is reference to fleet purchases and stations being made available to the public.
